The desktop bus ([http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/dbus DBUS]) is used to communicate between desktop components on a Linux (or Unix) system. If this was exposed to XPCOM objects, for bidirectional communication then tighter integration between the desktop and the browser could be achieved.
