This is a simple (yeah, really!) diagram of how you can send an email to someone else:

Then we will add a record to your DNS server to allow mail to be sent to the domain itself, instead of the machines. In fact, the above diagram does not include reading mail messages, but this acts as a starting point in order to run a basic email server.
