We need to expose the Raspberry Pi's hardware capabilities via standard interfaces as early in the Raspberry Pi ecosystem growth cycle as possible to avoid excessive forking of projects to create versions locked to the (current) Raspberry Pi implementation -- which is not scalable in the long run.
