If you look on the left-hand side a video or audio track, you will notice some buttons. One of the buttons looks like a lock. By default, the lock is active (highlighted). If you click on the lock, you will notice it is not highlighted - this means that the track is "unarmed" and will not be affected by any other track edits...
By arming a track, and unarming other tracks, then you can mark your frames in order to adjust volume audio levels, or truncate (cut) pieces off your video...
I would recommend to save your project...
