Considerations Prior to Installing
Computer labs using LTSP can range from extremely simple to complex:
- Use a cross-over ethernet cable to connect one thin client to the server.
- Use a switch to connect a number of thin clients to server via ethernet cables.
The computer lab can vary from "basics" where thin clients are placed on cheap used tables, or "impressive looking" computer labs where a great deal of time and effort are made to design and build desks, etc...
Based on my experience setting up LTSP computer labs, several consideration should be made prior to setting up the lab:
- Determine the maximum number of workstations that are required.
- This will allow you to determine the amount of RAM required for the server (rule: 128 Mb per thin client).
- For example, one server for every 15 thin clients.
- This will also allow you to determine the number of ports for a switch (generally, a switch is designed to operate more efficiently than a multi-port router).
- Check the power availability for the computer lab.
- Number of outlets.
- How clean is the electrical power?
- Will power outlets be required?
- Which power outlets are considered better suited for this purpose?
- How will you obtain the Computer Hardware?
- Donations from companies?
- Recycled computers (in the garbage)?

Installing Edubuntu on Server
The Procedure for installing the Alternate (LTSP) version of Edubuntu is different that the desktop version.
Although it makes reference to Edubuntu 8.10, here is an accurate graphical description of the install process.
